How to use a multimeter 2 - Voltage measurement

In this section we'll see how to measure voltage.

Your safety: be very careful with energised circuit when using DMM!

USE:
  • Set up DMM to correct configuration before use. Plug test leads into correct terminals for function as shown. AC & DC V use the same terminals.
  • Note a DMM set to Vdc will measure 0V on AC; a DMM set to Vac will measure a voltage on pulsating DC  but on constant DC it will measure 0V – see section AC/DC power.
  • Turn rotary switch to select AC ~ V or DC = V and maximum range as shown or as per DMM manual. You can change ranges while measuring voltage.
  • Connect the DMM across 2 points according to type of measurement you want - as shown below. Now energise the circuit.
This example shows AC V and 4 type of DC V measurements. Note 2 cases show incorrect connections. The DMM terminal connections for probes:
