How to use a multimeter 4 - Alternative current measurement

Here's an alternative method of measuring current by measuring voltage, resistance and using Ohm's Law. It may be an easier method.

USE:

  • De-energise the circuit.
  • Set up the DMM for resistance measurement and select say 2kā„¦ range. (You can change ranges later if needed.)
  • Connect the DMM to measure the resistor in the circuit, as shown. Write down its value.
  • Set up the DMM for voltage measurement and select say 20V range. (You can change ranges later if needed.) You should NOT have to change the connections.
  • Energise the circuit.

  • Measure the voltage and write down its value.
  • Use Ohm’s Law to calculate current as shown.

END of DMM
